Jim Dickinson, de bekend producer en muzikant uit Memphis zei het als volgt: Danny’s voice tells you he’s been through the pain of experience and the promise of hope. His songs say it all”.

To Find My Way Back Home”.

(Please note this review was originally published in Dutch and has been translated via "Google" . The actual review in Dutch follows the English translation.)

"This World Is Not Your Friend" is yours for the first encounter with Danny Brooks and comes straight through the door of your heart: it's a great album! The white Canadian, and I put here specifically as him being "white" because in the man's voice sounds like a native African American. He now lives in Llano Texas. He's been over thirty-five years in the profession and should actually be considered a master in soul, gospel, blues music genre. Raised in a religious family, he was immediately caught by soul, blues and gospel greats such as Solomon Burke, Joe Tex, The Soul Stirrers (Sam Cooke) and The Blind Boys Of Alabama. Sadly his taking to pernicious things like drugs and alcohol also summarizes the young Danny Brooks and he even ended up in jail. He repented and turned completely to the Faith. Jim Dickinson, the renowned producer and musician from Memphis said the following: "Danny's voice tells you he's been through the pain of experience and the promise of hope. His songs say it all.”

The disc itself has eighteen (sic!) songs written by Danny who plays guitar/slide and harmonica and perhaps his greatest asset, his voice: it’s a particularly pleasant, raw, soulful blues voice. Wife Debi provides the harmonic background vocals and percussion. Well over an hour we are treated to a particularly fascinating mix of Americana, Hill Country Blues and resulting in one of the most pleasant Soul Blues albums that we could greet the last few years. Because, Soul Blues so it is that we like to describe this piece. The title track that opens the album, is a pounding indictment of the modern era, especially how we experience it. You immediately feel that this record something big is about to happen. His wonderful voice coming all the way up her right to subsequent "Blue Highway", which is passionate, supported only with sober harmonica and guitar, religiously tinted. Wonderful atmospheric setting where you see the man on his porch in the swampy south to do his thing. A crowd of enthralled listeners is growing steadily at his feet. Catchy, compelling, animated. The personal element, stunningly beautiful, "All God's Children" is also unlikely that a sensitive issue in which the raw voice of Danny so wonderfully contrasts with Debi's input.

It's actually too crazy to highlight each of the eighteen songs because the record is one (serious) musical journey route which picks up several influences but ultimately, as mentioned, resulting in a fantastic Soul Blues Album. But one song we certainly can not fail to mention: the daughter, Caitlin Julie Marie inspired "Got To Find My Way Back Home". The girl, a talented painter, suffering from depression and this song, written especially for her, you have to hear! You actually ask yourself as they have reached the end of the song, where they got the power to put such a poignant song so down. Every song on this album tells a story, the lyrics are brilliant and effortless to follow the accompanying booklet with very beautiful pictures.

Actually the album is sparse in its delivery, not employing a full band. The way the quoted life experiences, prison, addiction, fall and rise again, love and faith are shown but testifies to an improbable sincerity and happening here with intensity and conviction that many modern pop stars can only dream of. Texassippi Soul Man Danny Brooks has nothing less than a masterpiece delivered with this record!
